The 5 Pilates Teacher Archetypes™: What Are They And Which One Are You
Most Pilates teachers have a default teaching style, a place they naturally go when they are not thinking about it. That is not a bad thing. It means you have found what is natural to you.
But here is what I have learned after years of studying great communicators and knowing this industry inside and out: the best teachers do not just have a style. They have range.
Through my research into the types of speakers and presenters out there, and through working with Pilates teachers at every level, I have identified five distinct teaching archetypes. These are not labels. They are tools. And understanding them will change the way you show up in every class you teach.
THE PILATES ENTERTAINERThe Pilates Entertainer™ brings the energy and the style. They tell great stories that add to the class, not distract from the work. They might build a playlist that supports the direction they want the class to go in. They are aware of every detail in the room, from the temperature and lighting to the spacing and overall vibe. They use their voice in different ways for effect, and people are genuinely excited to be in their class because they make the work enjoyable.
THE PILATES MOTIVATORThe Pilates Motivator™ is the cheerleader of the group. They are the teacher who can move you to do more than you thought you were capable of. They say the right things at the right time with the right energy, and suddenly you want to move. They use positive reinforcement to help you understand what you are doing well, and they use supportive, inspiring language to help you push yourself further than you thought you could go.
THE PILATES COACHThe Pilates Coach™ has a plan and a goal, and they know what your goals are too. They know what you are capable of and they cue and direct you to get there. They understand the goals of the exercise and the workout, and they make sure you reach those goals safely and effectively. They are masters at pushing you to your limit and knowing exactly when you have hit it.
THE PILATES EDUCATORThe Pilates Educator™ knows the why behind every exercise. They have a deep understanding of the work and your body, and they are experts at taking all of that knowledge and breaking it down in the simplest, most direct way possible. They make sure you understand what you are doing and why you are doing it.
THE PILATES PALThe Pilates Pal™ makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in. They are truly empathetic and they meet you exactly where you are. They are masters at reading the room and adjusting the workout to meet the moment. They remember your name, they remember the details about your life, and they connect with you in a way that makes you feel seen.
You Do Not need to Bring a 10 Every time
Each of these archetypes has a range, and I like to think of it as a scale from 1 to 10. You do not need to bring the 10 every time you teach. You bring what is needed in the moment, and that happens through how you communicate, using your voice and your body language.
Most good teachers naturally live in one or two of these archetypes because that is their wheelhouse. But the best teachers are able to move between all five. They read the room, they consider their program design, the format, the time of day, and the energy in front of them, and then they adjust.
Moving from one archetype to another is a skill and it is absolutely learnable. And here is something important: when you try on an archetype that is outside your comfort zone, you are not faking it. You are finding that tool within yourself and bringing it forward. Just like you had to practice teaching the language of Pilates, you have to practice teaching with the archetypes. As you do, you become more fully your own unique teacher with your own special IT Factor.
So, Which Archetype are you?
I built a free assessment to help you find out. It only takes a few minutes, and once you finish, you will be taken to a page that breaks down each archetype in more detail so you can see exactly where your strengths are and where you have room to grow.
